Return of a car!

Postby joggiwagga on Thu May 28, 2009 3:35 pm

So I told Bobby I'd join once I got my own car again.

Turns out that car is the White '92 Civic that Biohazard had for a few years and sold to his housemate last summer when he got his two current toys.

Phase one: pray that I don't ruin the transmission

Phase two (since we didn't have to do an engine swap to get it to run after what she did to it): fixing body rust.

Phase three: V-tech head and miscellany engine swapping.

For those that don't know his old Civic, I'll either hijack some of his old photos of it, or I'll hijack his camera and take new ones eventually.

He is too. Just because it's my car doesn't mean he wants to leave it alone... ~laughs~

He wants me to do a V6 swap but I can't feasibly do that with finances right now. And besides, I'm still learning standard which is why I'm fixing the outside up first before adding more power...

So far I think I will succeed in phase one! Its definitely interesting to relearn how to drive after 7 years, but unlike automatic the car talks back this time.

I just bought a chassis for $400 with pristine body panels... so I'll be doing the body work on my Civic in July after my layoff. Replacing two rear-quarter panels is my primary goal. Secondary cause I'm getting the whole body is front fender and bumper which were damaged when the owner between Robbie and I hit a post in a parking garage. Depending on condition may also be fixing the side headlight which also is no longer seated properly.

I might have to do some repainting, the chassis has a black bumper and hood, but I'll have fixed the rust problems (for a few winters anyway!).

um body work is a plus but maybe youll want to learn standard well enough before doing so not trying to be offensive just while learning the ins and outs shit happens lol

My original intent was to learn stick before even thinking about most of the body work, but this one sort of fell into my lap and I won't have the time to do most of the work for another month.

Also, it won't pass inspection until some of the work is done. And unlike the owner between Bio and myself, I am avoiding parking garage columns!

Ya, his old housemate within in a week of buying the car off him dinged up the front all nice in a parking garage. Part of my repair is to put in new headlights (there are JDM ones in good shape on the chassis I bought), so I won't have to worry about it wiggling a bit too free.

I definitely envy the "I don't have to worry about body rust" that many other parts of the country enjoy, but I like my winters cold! :-p

PHOTOS

Postby joggiwagga on Wed Jul 15, 2009 5:36 pm

My car, used to be Robbie's. A bit more battered than you may remember, I blame the intermediary driver.
Image

Exhibit A: See where damage was done from a loving encounter with a cement post... corner light, fender, and bumper to be replaced just have yet to do so.
Image

Exhibit B: Rust shows up REAL nice in this photo... probably the reason I haven't done the other body work is this is the priority and the harder part to do.
Image

In case you wondered, my car does in fact have nuts:
Image

Exhibit B, part 2: less rust here, still need to do it.
Image

Exhibit C: not as visible, but dent in this fender and the hood.
Image

I've got a rolling chassi to get all the parts from, I just need to do it. And I figure now I can do before and after photos. Make me feel like I'm doing something instead of being an unemployed bum.

Actually, I'm getting help from someone who works in a body shop for this project... and its going to involve welding rather than riviting. The bondo will just be to smooth over the welded edge. With any luck we'll be doing one side next Friday (driver side first as I think I can pass inspection with the left as is). The front work is all bolted on.

Got some of the body work done today with help. Driver's side fender replaced and rear quarter panel fixed. Waiting to do the actual painting till the OTHER side is fixed as well and do it all at once.

Shocks will be done very soon, reasons for them not being done involves miscommunication and such. I'm sort of embarassed how bad they are right now.

I'm so happy I got help, it was like watching someone create a puzzle and put it together.
Image

Front driver's side fender, sanded down. It had had never been properly painted, only spray-painted...
Image

I knew my suspension was shot... here's the proof.
Image

Front fender primered and on. Now my corner lights actually look like they fit instead of about to fall out!
Image

Patched, smoothed out, and primered. It looks better than the rest of my car and its not actually painted yet.

Slight change on what we're putting on so it passes inspection... some issues came up w/ the tip and adapter.

So now I have a large chrome shaft to put on my car...

The car passed inspection!

But now it looks like its sporting a strap on. I'll do a photo soon. I think my car has some serious gender identity issues.
